Team USA competes in 24 Hour Race

After winning in 2009, Team USA made another strong showing last weekend at Teesside Autodrome in Middlesborough, England, competing in the grueling "British 24 Hour" race in the 2010 European Pro-Kart Endurance Championship Series.  Team USA this year consisted of America's top guns: Johan Schwartz, Dan Burke, Kevin Bligan, Richard Burke, and Paul Alspach, and was very fortunate to have Pat Enzman Alspach alongside as team manager and doctor/trainer.

Team USA's qualifying effort put them on the pole for the second consecutive year.  The team felt good at the start of the race lapping most of the field, but a string of bad luck prevented them from winning twice in a row. Dan Burke said, "It's much more difficult to win twice in a row, especially when there are
39 other teams to beat in a mixed field of 78 total teams, on the longest track in the world."

Tragedy struck after dominating the race five hours in when the right-side spindle broke, causing their front wheel to fall off. After a quick visit to the garage for repairs, they raced back into 2nd place.  However, bad luck continued to haunt Team USA in their quest to reclaim the top podium spot when their left-side spindle broke. Again they worked their way back up through the field, only to have one of their engines blow up with only a few hours to go before the checkered flag.

"The competition definitely knew we were there," explained Richard Burke. Team USA finished in 7th place and earned the hire-class Fastest Lap Trophy award. On the podium, First and third place went to teams from England and second place to a Belgian team.

Team USA is already looking forward to winning the 2011 edition of the British
24 Hour race at Teesside Autodrome next August.  To stay in peak racing shape, members of Team USA will be utilizing World Karting Association (WKA) practice sessions at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Carolina Motorsports Park, with rental karts provided exclusively by the EnduranceKarting.com kart rental program.

Endurance Races: If you’ve ever watched pro drivers race and wished you could do the same, here is your chance!  You will be placed on a four to six-person team – or you can bring your own team.  Races include up to 28 teams and begin with a Le Mans-style start.  Each team member rotates driving and pit strategy duties throughout our 1.5-hour or 6-hour endurance races.  We follow each race with an awards ceremony to celebrate and recognize each team member.  Endurance races are a great bonding experience as everyone works together to achieve a common goal – victory. 24 Hours of America: We are working to confirm dates for our fourth-annual 24 Hours of America.  Our first three races were extremely successful.  Drivers from all over the U.S. and the world participated in the races, and the 2008 race was won by only 29 seconds.  You must have racing experience to compete in the 24 Hours of America, which you can gain by participating in racing schools and endurance races throughout the year.  Don’t miss your chance to be part of a memorable experience.
